Overview of Cosmetic Dentistry

by Dr. Laurie T. Hanschu

If you are online at all, or read your local newspaper and look at the ads, then chances are very good that you already know something about cosmetic dentistry. But you are wondering, is it one treatment? Or is it a combination?

Cosmetic dentistry is both. It can be a single treatment like teeth whitening or porcelain veneers, or a combination of treatments like teeth whitening followed by crown application. In short, it is any single treatment, or combination that gives you the smile you want (a "Smile Makeover")

Cosmetic dentistry can be done to create a spectacular smile even if you have a healthy mouth. Minimally invasive treatments (requiring minimal change to your natural teeth) can range from tooth whitening and bonding (white filling material added to reshape the teeth) to beautiful and durable facings called porcelain veneers. Sometimes tooth whitening and orthodontics are the very best solution. What you need first is an expert such as Dr. Stefanie Shore to evaluate your smile, listen to your concerns and help you develop a customized plan to give you the smile you want.

Cosmetic dentistry can also help you if you have unattractive fillings or crowns, excess space, crooked teeth or worn or broken teeth. Dr. Shore's goal for you will be twofold: to create a beautiful smile and to restore you to ideal function.

Sound complicated? Don’t worry about it. All you really need to know is that cosmetic dentistry can give you the smile you want.

Dr. Shore can offer you a number of cosmetic dentistry treatments, including tooth colored fillings (bonding), porcelain veneers, dental crowns, minor tooth movement with “Invisalign” type trays and teeth whitening.

Dental Crowns

Crowns cover the entire surface of your teeth. They are needed when your teeth are significantly broken down and need to be “restored.” Individual crowns are colored to match adjacent teeth, but if you are going with a full set of crowns as a cosmetic dentistry treatment you can have them made in whatever shade you choose.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are shells that are crafted from dental porcelain and used to cover the fronts of the teeth. They are colored to look the same as your own teeth or, if you prefer, you can go whiter. They hide staining, gapping, and chipping or reshape the teeth to give you an ideal smile. Veneers usually cover only the front of the teeth in order to preserve most of your natural tooth structure.

Teeth Whitening

If your teeth are generally in good condition, you may just need a cosmetic dentistry whitening treatment to get the look you want. Dr. Shore uses three methods of whitening. Professional “at home” whitening is the most inexpensive way to whiten and is most often chosen by patients. For extra sensitive patients or those want a quicker result, Boost in office whitening is available. For very darkly stained teeth or for those who did not get good results with previous whitening attempts, the KOR method of deep whitening can be the best choice. With KOR you can go up to eight shades whiter and eliminate even the deepest stains from your teeth.
