Implant Supported Dentures Overview

by Dr. Laurie T. Hanschu

Dr. Stefanie Shore is a restorative dentist in Carmichael, CA offering a wide array of advanced treatments, including implant-supported dentures. This is a modern type of restorative dentistry that combines the amazing sophistication of dental implants with the function and convenience of dentures.

Our patients in Carmichael, CA should consult with us whenever there are questions relating to the function of their teeth and gums. Our goal is to always ensure that our patients have the healthiest teeth and gums possible, and to offer the treatments necessary to restore function if it has diminished or is lost altogether. This is precisely why we offer dental implants and the overdentures that can also be described as implant-supported dentures.

Dental implants are often used as complete replacements for a missing tooth. Three pieces are necessary to replace a tooth – a threaded post called a dental implant that is surgically inserted into the jaw and gum, the cap or crown that is visible in the mouth and the abutment that extends from the implant to support the crown. They function precisely as natural teeth, offering a durable and long lasting substitute, and even preventing the loss of gum and bone tissue.

When you have lost some or all your upper or lower teeth, you may think the only solution is removable dentures. For many, dentures function well and look good. However, you may want to enjoy a more functional fit with your dentures; therefore, we offer implant-supported dentures too. The other tremendous benefit of implant-supported dentures is that the implants actually preserve your bone. Without implants, denture wearers can expect their bone to dissolve over time making the dentures less stable and retentive.

The way implant-supported dentures work is simple – we will consult with you to determine the issue, and then identify the appropriate number of implants to meet your needs. It could be just two, but some patients require four to eight implants to support their overdentures. We then craft the dentures to snap over the implants or to a bar that connects several implants. This means the dentures are removable for oral hygiene, but can be worn when eating or speaking, offering you a secure and confident fit.

We would be happy to discuss in person or by phone how modern fit dentures can give you a beautiful smile and good function or, the option of creating overdentures with implants to give your dentures a firm grip and to preserve your natural bone. Just a few implants can make a tremendous difference in your comfort, confidence and ability to chew. Implant overdentures are the most affordable of the implant options for denture wearers.
