Dental Implants Overview

Dental Implants Overview

If you have lost teeth, you know how traumatic it can be. You not only lose your ability to bite and chew, but your smile also suffers. The gaps between your teeth make you feel reluctant to smile. After an extraction, it’s best to find a solution in the form of a bridge, dentures, or dental implants.

Unfortunately, there are more than just aesthetic problems associated with tooth loss. When you lose teeth, you also lose bone in your jaw, and that can lead to a prematurely aged appearance due to sagging in the face. In addition, your remaining teeth will start to crowd into the gaps. This can lead to misalignment, and also problems with dental hygiene that can result in tooth decay and gum disease.

There are solutions available. In the past, your only option for replacing all of your teeth was dentures. They can still be a good choice today thanks to modern techniques that make them fit much better and work more effectively. The best choice by far, though, is dental implants. Dental implants will work and feel natural in ways that dentures simply will not, no matter how well they are made and fitted.

Dental implants consist of titanium screws or posts that are placed surgically in your jaw, and that support porcelain or resin restorations that are indistinguishable from your natural teeth. When you have dental implants installed, you will have the appearance and the functionality that go along with natural teeth. They work and feel just the same as your own teeth. At Shore Dental, we offer our patients the options of single tooth implants or bridges on implants to replace one or just a few teeth. For those who are missing all of their upper and/or lower teeth, we offer full-mouth dental implants with fixed bridges or removable implant-supported dentures. In many cases, “teeth in a day” can be offered. Mini implants are an option for patients who lack adequate jawbone structure for standard diameter implants.

You still need to take care of your dental implants to prevent infection or bone loss.  If the underlying jaw structure weakens, the implants could fail. You will still need to see Dr. Stefanie Shore for regular checkups and see her dental hygienist for cleanings.

Properly cared for, though, your implants will probably outlast you. Just brush, floss, and see Dr. Shore regularly and you will be set for life with your dental implants.
