Benefits of Full Dentures

by Dr. Laurie T. Hanschu

Dr. Stefanie Shore, a restorative dentist in Carmichael, CA, encourages our patients to remain calm if they hear that they are a candidate for full dentures. Full dentures are recommended when it is no longer possible to restore the teeth or likelihood of maintaining the teeth for a reasonable period of time is too poor. Some people choose full dentures because the cost of restoring and maintaining the teeth is impossible for them. If you are considering dentures, I will spend time with you evaluating all of your options before we go forward with removing your teeth. I will also explain the value in keeping some roots or placing some implants to help preserve bone and improve function.

When we say full dentures, we mean the entire set of teeth in the upper and / or lower jaw. As a functional replacement for missing teeth, dentures are one of the most dependable forms of restorative dentistry. With adequate bone support many patients function very well with full dentures. Others require at least a few dental implants to anchor the dentures, especially the lower.  Many patients significantly improve their appearance with dentures.

Though you may have an old-fashioned or outdated vision of dentures, you should know that today’s dentures are made specifically to your mouth’s dimensions and can remain in place, comfortably, as you eat, speak, and go about your daily life. In fact, this is one of the most important benefits of full dentures – they are restorative – enabling full function of the mouth.

Of course, there are many other benefits for dentures, and they include:

Dentures are a new smile

This is a very significant issue, because those with dental issues that require removal of teeth tend to suffer everything from pain and bad breath to a decline in self-esteem because of it. With the dentures, though, it is a new day and you can go out into the world with a gorgeous, natural looking, and functional smile.

Reduce worries

While twice annual checkups and cleanings will still be part of your regular oral care, with dentures you will have freedom from the worst of your dental problems and concerns. For example, if you were prone to cavities, had issues with your gums, or any other concerns, these disappear with dentures. You just do regular oral hygiene, have your exam and cleanings, and enjoy life to the fullest!

Natural looking

Today’s dentures are extraordinarily realistic, and because they are designed to the dimensions of your face and mouth, they are going to appear to be entirely natural. They will support the muscles and soft tissue of the face too, ensuring that you look like you over the long term.
